RE: Full Time Beginner

I'd say a B or C depending on how much space you want.
You should be able to pick up a good used Class C at a reasonable price and you can make sure it has the capacity to tow whatever you would prefer as a toad.

RE: Anyone using WorldNav Truck GPS ??

I'm assuming from the lack of response that no one who has read this is familiar with the unit.
I'm also interested and the fact that you can put in the specs for your rig (height, weight) and the routing software will avoid places you should not be going sounds like a great idea.

RE: Short Bed vs Long Bed

Its a funny old world Jeff.
I completely missed the humor but did find the incentive to use the help feature to learn if it was possible to block a member so their posts would not display when I read a topic.
It is BTW. Whew.

RE: Bed clearance

Dump the pickup bed and get you one of these;
http://www.atecdiversified.com/page53.html
You'll have all the clearance in the world.
My F-550 crew cab TV had a similar conversion done and clearance is certainly not a thing that needs to be considered.
What does need thinking about is what we ran into (and why we got the truck for a very low price). After the conversion, ours no longer fit any of the vehicles listed in either of the major blue books so no one would make an auto loan on it.
The dealer who had taken this truck in trade had to wait for a cash buyer and was willing to give us a really nice price.
Great if you are buying but maybe a problem if you need to sell it.
That said, I am as happy as a clam. I'd post a photo but I'm at work and our blasted firewall hates photobucket.

RE: Triple axels - pros and cons?

FWIW - if you have driven in Europe in the past few years, you may have noticed that the tractor trailer trucks are running triple axle single wheels on the trailer. You pretty much can't find a double axle dual wheel rig anywhere.
I certainly don't know the ins & outs of it but it seems to work well for them and many of their roads are lots smaller than ours with tighter turns required.

RE: Excessive wire gauge wasts costly copper

I am an idiot when it comes to electrical matters so I don't really understand the why of it but from years of operating a trolling motor on a boat, I have found that unlike A/C current, with D/C you get more efficient use from a battery using the largest possible wire over the shortest distance.
D/C apparently suffers loss based in large part on wire size (smaller = more loss) and distance (longer = more loss).
I do know that I can get at several hours more use from a battery charge using 8 gauge wire from battery to trolling motor than using 12 gauge over a distance of about 20 feet.

RE: gas mileage guestimate

Diesel prices are really jumpy lately. I tanked up last Saturday at $4.15. Sunday it was up to $4.30 and driving to work today I saw it everywhere at $4.45. That is just plain crazy.
But it is what it is so plan to take it slow and enjoy the trip part of the trip. Otherwise you might as well switch to a car and motels.

RE: cross country trip

This forum offers as good a selection of advice as I've seen anywhere.
Give some details (rig, experience level, kids, how much time) and you'll quickly be loaded up with plenty of it.
Oh, and welcome.

RE: Towing and payload capacities???

And note that the added weight of the 4wd will reduce the available capacity for your 5ver.
If you need a 4wd truck as a truck, then by all means get one but if it is mainly for towing, it will be a slight disadvantage.

RE: King Pin Stabilizer

If you need to need to google up Rotochok you need to use this spelling and just the one word.

RE: New RV AC Problems

From the sound of it, you have good reason to take it back and have the dealer fix it. Something IS wrong.

RE: safety chains

And from the instructions by the North Carolina Boating License and Boating Safety Course
http://www.boat-ed.com/nc/course/p2-4_trailering.htm
I know that when I towed my last boat in NC (the new one has spring loaded safety cables which will support the tongue) I had to cross the chains or risk a ticket.

RE: Making wireless work on the road

That was a terrific how-to.
I think I digested about ? of it on the first reading but do plan to keep on when I'm a little fresher. The part about using a pair of wireless routers /w cat-5 is especially interesting.

Flashy, crawly, wiggly adverts - can they be stopped

I don't mind advertising links and understand the need for them.
However, the ones that move, scroll text, or similar are not pleasant. The Winny & Ford ones out there today are bad enough to give me a headache.
Is there any way to simply make them stop moving? I normally use Firefox but can also use IE7.

RE: Pulling a trailer behind your fifthwheel

Some states don't allow triples, so watch where you travel.
"Triple" would be three towed pieces behind your TV. Fiver + a boat, tractor with two mail trailers, etc. is properly called a double.
